Skilled Nurse Alayne J. Reid, BN, MHSc(Ed), MCN, to Be Published in the Worldwide Leaders in Healthcare

With an upcoming publication in the Worldwide Leaders in Healthcare, Alayne J. Reid, BN, MHSc(Ed), MCN, joins the prestigious ranks of the International Nurses Association. She is a Registered Nurse with forty years of extensive experience in her field and a vast expertise in cancer nursing and teaching. Alayne is currently serving patients as a Clinical Facilitator at Griffith University in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Over the years, she rotated through various areas, including maternity, before settling into cancer nursing. Alayne worked for 28 years as a cancer nurse, as a resource nurse, acting charge nurse, and clinical nurse, through inpatient, outpatient, ambulatory care, and, generally, with patients receiving cytotoxic chemotherapy. The last 17 years as a cancer nurse, she was as a clinically based educator. In 2012, she left cancer nursing to take up a position teaching nursing students at Griffith University. Alayne has been a lecturer and a tutor, but has found her niche facilitating the students during their practicums. She believes that nursing is a very practice-based profession and students require time with real patients under supervision to enable them to apply theory to practice.

Alayne has always wanted to be a nurse; her mother and grandmother were nurses. She attributes her success to always wanting to make a difference and help care for people. Her success comes from being honest, never trying to be more than what she is. “My success now with the nursing students comes from treating them as our nurses of the future, to be nurtured, not bullied or ignored,” says Alayne. Her research interests include cultural differences on either side of the bedsheets and how they interact with each other and affect the healthcare provided. Alayne graduated her nursing training and obtained her hospital based registration at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane in 1979. In 1993, she earned her bachelor degree of nursing at the University of New England, NSW, Australia, followed by her graduate diploma in nursing education in 1995. In 2000, she acquired her master degree of nursing (MN) at Queensland University of Technology, followed by her master degree of health science with a focus on education at the University of Sydney in 2002, and her certificate IV in Training and Assessment at Rose Training Institute in Brisbane in 2011.

Alayne was Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Certified. She is also a member of the Royal College of Nurses and the Australian Nurse Teacher Society. In the past, she served as a Speaker for the Cancer Council Queensland. “I am ensuring that our patients receive the best care I can provide through my students. As these students are the nurses of the future, I am assisting their growth, and helping to provide the patients of tomorrow with the best possible care,” states Alayne about the way she makes a difference in the lives of patients. “I look forward to finding out where each of my students are at with their learning and the application of that learning. As well, I look forward to learning new information with my students, and refreshing my medical and surgical knowledge,” she adds. In her spare time, Alayne dedicates to hiking with her husband, traveling, reading, and cross stitching.
